- This was Jones' first fight with Alton Merkerson as his trainer. Jones had been trained by his father, but the two had a falling out. Roy Jones Sr. refused to attend the Thomas fight.
- Jones hurt Thomas late in the eighth round. Jones followed up with a flurry of punches and dropped Thomas with a left hook. Thomas got up at the count of seven and stumbled to the ropes. Referee Frank Santore Jr. stopped the fight.
