Frankie Suarez started boxing at age 14 in Joe Brady's Tampa Boxing Gym. After graduating from Hillsborough High School in 1972 he spent four years in the Navy. During this time he compiled a reported amateur record of 56 wins in 60 fights and was a two-time Florida-Carribean Golden Gloves titlist. Among the fighters who beat him were Keith Broom, in the 1977 National Golden Gloves tournament, and Michael Spinks. He turned professional in April 1977 and was managed by Lou Viscusi, Pete Ashlock and Charlie Andrews.
