George Chuvala, the Canadian champ and fifth-ranked heavyweight in the world, knocked out Charles Couture of Lyons, France, at 1:30 of the second stanza of a scheduled ten-round bout.
A hard right decked Couture in the first round and a thunderous left hook put an abrupt end to the Frenchman, who sported an 18-4 record, midway through the second round.
Chuvalo sized up his foe at the outset, flicking his left in the opening round. Then he unleashed a murderous right that exploded on the Frenchman's chin, decking him for a count of five. Then end came fast in the second. George let go with a left hook and Couture went down as though pole axed. He was counted out and remained on the canvas after dropping with a sickening thud.
The ringside physician noted Couture "was having trouble breathing" and he had to be helped from the ring.
Charles Couture was a late replacement for Mike Boswell, who was injured in a shooting six days prior to the bout. The card also included an exhibition between Earnie Shavers and Jim Carafelli, of Wooster, Ohio.
