Murray died April 29, 1833, nine days after he was defeated by Owen Swift. Some sources claim that he died because of injuries he received in the fight, but this was not the case. As the Bell's Life in London reported: "ever since his fight he has been a constant companion of "Captain Lushman," and having in the course of the preceding week found his way into a ditch at Walham Green, he got a severe cold, which was followed by influenza and death".
