Gervonta Davis 130 lbs beat Hugo Ruiz 129 lbs by KO at 2:59 in round 1 of 12

Bout Summary

Gervonta Davis retained his WBA Super World Super Featherweight title with a first knockout of last minute substitute Hugo Ruiz. From the start, Ruiz, moving up in weight on short notice, began retreating into corners. Davis, sensing weakness, caught Ruiz in a corner near the end of the round and landed a right hook which dropped Ruiz and broke his nose, with blood streaming out nonstop. Ruiz beat the count, but did not answer referee Jack Reiss, who stopped the contest at 2:59 of the first round.

Notes

  • Ruiz entered the fight as the WBA #9 super featherweight contender.
  • This was the twentieth knockout in 21 professional bouts for Davis, the best start by a recognized world champion in the lower weight classes since the late Edwin Valero of Venezuela.
