Guillermo Rigondeaux claimed the lineal, WBO and The Ring Magazine titles with a unanimous decision win over Nonito Donaire in the main event of HBO's card at Radio City Music Hall, New York, New York.
A tense few opening rounds saw each man looking for counter-punching opportunities while respecting the power of his opponent. The chess match continued into the middle rounds with Rigondeaux moving around the ring and trying to land his signature straight left hand. The lightning-quick Donaire came forward but struggled to land against his quicker opponent.
Donaire stepped up his aggression in the tenth round and caught Rigondeaux with a straight left hand while in a southpaw stance that put the Cuban on his backside for a one-count.
In the final round, a clean left hand from Rigondeaux injured the right eye of Donaire. He kept the eye covered for the remainder of the round and by the end of the bout it was noticeably swollen and bruised.
