Herb Owen
Herb Owen (died 1951) was a Pacific Northwest wrestling and boxing promoter. Herb Owen promoted boxing in 1940 for a short time at Portland's Labor Temple. Owen was the boxing promoter in Eugene during the 1920s, 1930s, and early 1940s, as well as the wrestling promoter. Owen also promoted in Medford during the early 1930s, and became the promoter in Klamath Falls in 1932. Owen is best known though as the founder of the Owen family wrestling promotional company which was the Northwest's leading promoter for 67 years. Owen began as an assistant matchmaker to Portland-based Australian wrestler Ted Thye in 1925. When Thye made a trip to Australia, Owen put the company in his name, thus establishing himself as the promoter of wrestling in Portland, since rules at the time only allowed for one promoter. Owen would run his wrestling empire until his death in 1951. He was succeded in the operation by his sons Don Owen and Elton Owen, who through Don, would run the business until 1992.
