• In the United states, Mensah was trained in the Joliet, Illinois gym of former cruiserweight contender Joseph Awinongya, better known as the trainer of middleweight contender Osumanu Adama. After a falling out, Mensah fought in a WBC regional title bout in Mexico in a 12 round IBF eliminator for the # 2 ratings position, without Awinongya, and lost the decision. Back in Ghana, Mensah won a comeback bout, then won the IBF Continental African Light Welterweight title in 2013.
