In 1947 he made the final of the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions with a reported disputed decision being awarded to Columbus Lowman at welterweight and Grimes was selected to represent New York for the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at welterweight. He also made the semi-final of the National AAU in 1947.
