According to former boxer and referee George Barton, in his 1957 book My Lifetime in Sports, welterweight Panama Joe Gans was a sparring partner for Jack Dempsey in preparation for Dempsey's 1919 title bout with Jess Willard. Dempsey used Gans for the purposes of developing speed.
Gans's verified fights are in the linked record. His 1915-17 bouts in Panama were all verified from the Panama Star & Herald. The following fights are unverified, although mentioned in his published records:
- 1914: Young Steadman, W KO-1; Kid Murray, W KO-6; Mike O'Connor, W KO-4; Kid Greaves, W KO-6; Slammer Jordan, W KO-3; Battling Terry, W KO-9; Kid Bailey, W Points 15; Kid Coldhurst, W KO-6. (Some of these fights may have occurred in Barbados, preceding Gans's arrival in the Canal Zone in 1915.)
