Matt Wells defeated Hall of Fame fighters Owen Moran, Abe Attell, and Freddie Welsh in his career. During his amateur career, he won four consecutive ABA Lightweight titles (1904-07). Wells also competed at the 1908 London Olympic Games in the lightweight division. Wells stepped away from boxing in late 1917 and began his career as a referee in American rings. Earning several write-ups in American newspapers of the day lauding his ability as a referee.

Wells was diagnosed with total loss of memory in December 1926 and hospitalised. Le Journal, Paris 25-12-1926. Wells must have recovered because later on in life he became a respected boxing referee.
