Johnny Crowe's parents were Frank and Bridgit Crowe of San Francisco. He died from injuries sustained in the ring just a few months after the catastrophic San Francisco Earthquake.

On Sept. 28, 1906, a one-two punch to the heart and kidney caused Crowe to drop during his bout with Billy Snailham at the Everett, Washington, AC. He soon died of what the coroner's jury termed "over-exertion." Doctors who performed the autopsy found that Crowe had a double ("hourglass") stomach and a slightly enlarged heart. He also had a blood clot in the brain, which had prevented him from having normal respiration.

Snailham was arrested and charged with manslaughter, although Crowe's parents pleaded that he not be prosecuted.
