In 1948 Juan Evangelista Venegas won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions at bantamweight and represented New York for the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at bantamweight stopping Kenneth Nienhause at 1:37 of the 1st.
First Puerto Rican to win an Olympic medal. The Puerto Rican Boxing Commission sponsored the Juan Evangelista Venegas Boxing Tournament in his memory. Venegas died in the 1980s.
