- 1972 Chicago Park District 105 lb. Jr. Division champ
- 1973 Chicago Golden Gloves Novice Division 112 lb. Champ.
- 1974 Winner of Regional tournament, Fox Valley WI. and runner-up in State Tournament.
- Early 1975 Leo Became one of the youngest boxers to win a Chicago Park District Open Champions, winning the 126 lb. Open Division City Title at the age of 17 yrs.

As an amateur, Podgorski fought many tough open division boxers, many who later competed as professionals, such as Pete Sanchez, Wayne Lynumn, Tony Reed, Joey Adelfio, Jose Mendoza, Art Salas and Ali Kareem Muhammad.
Leo's best amateur wins were his Golden Gloves finals victory over Brian G. Doherty who went on to become Alderman of Chicago's 41st Ward and his toe to toe battle with Luis Aguilar in an open division Golden Gloves tournament, semi-final match.
