Career Review
Irwin "Eddie" Axelrod was a colorful middleweight club-fighter who fought on Miami Beach during the 1970s.
Axelrod was a U.S. military veteran during the Viet-Nam War and reportedly lived in Israel for a period of time. In 1972, he moved to South Florida and decided at the age of 33 to become a professional boxer.
He started training at the famed 5th Street Gym on 5th Street and Washington Avenue on South Beach. Axelrod was a muscular 155 pounder, with a lean build and powerful arms. He trained under the well-known Sully Emmett.
Axelrod was a stand-up boxer with a good jab and a hard punch. However, if he couldn't knockout his opponent after two rounds, then he usually fell apart. Normally he built up an early points lead, only to tire and then get stopped.
On March 13, 1973, Axelrod made his Miami Beach debut, against Mike Bombero. Axelrod was leading on points when he tired and was stopped in the third round. A month later, Axelrod was again winning on points, only to get stopped by Joe Eplett. 1973 turned into a dismal year for Axelrod; being TKO'd by Bombero in their rematch.
Promoter Chris Dundee usually used Axelrod in the closing four or six rounder of his fight cards. However, after his three consecutive losses, it was time for Irwin Axelrod to retire.
Between fights, Irwin was a fixture at the Miami Beach Chess Club on 21st Street and Washington Avenue, and the Lincoln Road Mall on South Beach.
On December 10, 1975, in Miami Beach, Axelrod launched a comeback, and in his first fight back, scored a one-punch first-round knockout over George Harris.
In 1976, Axelrod continued his winning streak with an upset decision over local favorite Rocky Pope.
After losing back-to-back disputed decisions to Mike Moracz and Miguel Morral, Irwin Axelrod announced his retirement from boxing.
