McMurtry served in the Army during World War II, seeing action at Guadalcanal amongst the first wave of American troops. McMurtry was shot in the right ankle by a sniper's bullet, and ended up with a total disability. During the last years of his life, McMurtry and his wife were frequent visitors to the Cincinnati Zoo.
