Joey Silvers ws one of the three fighting Silvers brothers; Marty Silvers and Pal Silvers being the others.
Joey was ranked as the #6 Jr. Lightweight in the world by The Ring magazine in its inaugural year of 1924.
In addition to being a boxer, Joey Silvers was a racketeer in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. He was involved with both the Shapiro Brothers gang and the rival mob which came to be known as Murder Incorporated. Silvers was shot to death by "Happy" Maione of Murder Incorporated in retaliation for switching sides from the Murder Incorporated gang to the Shapiro Brothers. Boxer Irving Shapiro (#088346) was one of the Shapiro Brothers gangsters, and he was also killed by the Murder Incorporated gang, dying less than a year after the killing of Joey Silvers.
In reporting the murder of Joey Silvers, the Brooklyn newspapers said that his real name was Joseph Silverberg. Joey Silvers also appeared on stage in vaudeville. He was survived by a wife and two children.
