The super middleweight division was first established by the Ohio Boxing Commission in 1974 and then staged as a World Athletic Association bout in 1982. The division was next recognized in 1984 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) covering weights between 160 and 168 lbs. The division was recognized by the World Boxing Association (WBA) in 1987 and by the World Boxing Council (WBC) in 1988.
