Before 2,000 fans in attendance, Estrada (147) was knocked down by two right hands and a left along the ropes in the 10th round. After he was given a mandatory eight-count by referee James Warring, Cintron (146½) quickly had him reeling from twelve head shots. Warring promptly jumped in to rescue Estrada at 1:13 of the round. Cintron had connected on 306 of 760 punches, while Estrada landed just 199 of 621.
Cintron, from Puerto Rico, was crowned IBF Latino World Champion. After the fight he went to Good Samaritan Hospital for stitches. He had been cut over the right eye in the third, by a referee-ruled butt. Estrada himself was taken to St. Mary's Hospital suffering from dehydration. He had spit blood in the sixth, as well as being staggered by two rights.
This IBF welterweight elimination title bout was not a week old before ESPN-TV declared it an "Instant Classic" and a candidate for "Fight of the Year."
