LaVerne Collier fought a few times prior to World War One as "Chief Geronimo." He fought, and drew with, future World Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey when Dempsey was just starting out on his legendary career.
Collier then became a well-known newspaper man, but at age 28 was killed in auto-train collision in Miami, Florida where he was editor of the Miami Daily Tab.
