Marcel Cerdan 159 lbs beat Cyrille Delannoit 160 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15

"Marcel Cerdan recaptured the European middleweight title from young Cyrille Delannoit of Belgium tonight on a 15 round decision that may earn Cerdan a September shot at the world championship. The jammed thousands in Palais Des Sports were on their feet screaming during most of tonight's close, bruising fight. The bout featured more punching and less science than any important scrap staged in Europe in years. During the slugging, Delannoit was floored four times. But on each occasion he jumped to his feet without a count, apparently unhurt. Cerdan remained on his feet throughout, but he was staggered several times by the sturdy Belgian's straight rights to the chin. Although Cerdan won without questions, his margin was hardly wide enough to be called impressive." -United Press

New York Promoter Andy Niederreiter was in attendance. Having Tony Zale under contract for a September 10th defense at either Ebbet's Field in NY or Roosevelt Stadium in NJ, he told sportswriters before the bout that Cerdan would have to win impressively in order to get the title shot or he would give the opportunity to welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson.
