Marvin Hagler floors Roy Jones in the second round

Marvin Hagler 159 lbs beat Roy Jones 159 lbs by TKO at 2:10 in round 3 of 10

  • Date: 1977-06-10
  • Location: Civic Center, Hartford, Connecticut, USA
  • Referee: John Lawson

Jones was knocked down at the end of round two, and Hagler continued to punish him until the referee stopped the fight with 50 seconds to go in round three.

It has been reported that this Roy Jones is the father of Roy Jones Jr., the former four-division world champion.

In his book Dark Trade: Lost in Boxing, Donald McRae wrote: "Big Roy did not discourage the belief that he was the Roy Jones who had lost consciousness beneath the magnificent fist of Marvin. It was later proved that another fighter altogether, albeit with the same name, had lost to Hagler."

In the April 1994 issue of Boxing Illustrated, Phil Berger wrote: "The record book shows a 'Roy Jones' fought Marvin Hagler in June 1977, and in the past Big Roy allowed as to how he was that victim of a third round knockout. But on this night, when asked to confirm that agate line in Hagler's precis, he would only say, 'That's what they say. Don't worry about it. Print it like you want.'"
