Muff Bronson, born Muffey Boichuk, arrived in Portland, Oregon, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1915, where he had boxed previously. His family was of Lithuanian origins.

Bronson was highly regarded in Portland early in his career [2][3], running off an early unbeaten streak, until he had an unsuccessful trip to San Francisco where he lost the Pacific Coast Lightweight Title. Following this loss, he struggled and frequently came into bouts out of shape.

He began to turn his career around in 1918, when he upset Frankie Farren in a bout for the Pacific Coast Lightweight Title. He followed that up with a drubbing of Alex Trambitas, who had surpassed him as Portland's top Lightweight. After he lost the Coast title to Johnny McCarthy on a 4th round TKO, he again fell into disarray. His last chance at the big time came on January 1, 1920 when he was knocked out in 100 seconds by Lightweight contender Charley White's left hook at the the Milwaukie Arena.

He would continue fighting until 1926, using his name recognition to get fights in the Northwest until promoters stopped using him, before eventually finding his way into the Midwest.

He died in Portland.

Regional Titles

  • Pacific Coast Featherweight Title (1916, fizzles out as he moves to Lightweight)(the Pacific Coast and Pacific Northwest featherweight and lightweight classes were often jumbled during this period [4])
  • Pacific Northwest Lightweight Title (1916-17): [5]
  • Pacific Coast Lightweight Title (1917, 1918, 1918)

(Note: All these titles were claims and were often subject to dispute depending on the area.)
