Nat Litfin fought five world champs during his career--Georgie Pace, Willie Pep, Petey Scalzo, Joey Archibald, and Sixto Escobar. He defeated Archibald and Escobar. He was ranked the #2 bantamweight in the world by The Ring magazine after defeating Escobar. Much of his early record is still not documented. One of the difficulties in unraveling Litfin's record is that he fought under a wide variety of names including Nate Lifton and Nate Liftin, Abie Lifton and Abie, Liftin, and as Nat Liftin, finally as Dave Lipton in one newspaper account--whether this was by choice or newspaper mistakes is unclear--what is clear is that they were all the same fighter.

Litfin began his professional career in 1929 in the Pittsburgh/Western Pennsylvania/eastern Ohio area. After six known fights, he went to the West Coast where he had at least six more fights between August 1929 and May 1932, and perhaps many more than that. He was scheduled to box Eagle Thomas at the Main Street Athletic Club, Los Angeles, January 25, 1930, according to the Los Angeles Times, at 118 pounds, but that fight has not yet been documented. Litfin also had one or two fights in Arizona at this time that have not yet been documented (Long Beach Press Telegram).

Litfin returned to Pittsburgh in 1932. His first fight upon returning to the east was with Wee Willie Davies.
