Pete Sanstol vs. Mickey Sidden
Pete Sanstol 116 lbs beat Mickey Sidden 116 lbs by TKO in round 3 of 6
- Date: 1928-06-06
- Location: Forum, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
On this evening, Pete Sanstol made his third appearance in a Montreal ring. Also on this program at the Montreal Forum were Archie Skinner and Elzear Rioux, the semi-final of Toronto's Jackie Johnston vs. Denmark's Knud Larsen, and the main event of Canadian Featherweight Champion Leo (Kid) Roy vs. Wyoming's Eddie Anderson. After having witnessed Sanstol's earlier fights in Montreal, Kid Roy had consistently employed the Norwegian as his favorite sparring partner, to help him "sharpen up his speed"--particularly for Roy's various Canadian Featherweight Title defenses. (Montreal's The Gazette, May 9, 1928, edition.)
According to the June 7 edition of The Gazette:
"The third affair ended in three rounds when Pete Sanstol of New York put Mickey Sidden of Scranton down for the count of ten, the Scranton lad being unable to see for blood that flowed from a cut above his right eye. This bout, while it lasted, was easily the best fight of the evening....
"Pete Sanstol and Mickey Sidden provided the best boxing and the most action in their six-round set-to, the third bout of the evening, even though Sidden was no match for the darting New Yorker. Sanstol danced about his opponent with dazzling footwork and after playing around for two rounds proceeded to put him away in the third. He measured Sidden with deadly accuracy when he saw the Scranton lad weakening and when Sidden went down, blood, streaming down a deep cut over his right eye, blinded him so that it was impossible for him to finish the fight. It was Sanstol's third victory by knockout in as many appearances before local fans." (Actually, Sanstol had by a decision in his second appearance: his May 9th fight with Charlie Pinto.)
