Red Watson fought under the name of 'Red Corbett' 1909-10. He is not to be confused with a flyweight named Red Watson, who was fighting out of New Orleans during his career.

It is believed he spent some time in a youth reformatory at Whittier, California, in 1910-1911, after violating probation. He had been accused of robbing a pool hall in San Diego.

Jack Kearns took over his management, per the Oct. 27, 1914 Tacoma Daily News (Tacoma, WA, USA). He was also managed by "Bronco Bill" Anderson. (See the September 14, 2003 Book Review of the Sunday paper of the Los Angeles Times for a review on a biography on a silent film cowboy star "Bronco Billy" Anderson. In addition to being a film star, he was an owner of a film company called Essany, which had Charlie Chaplin for a brief period.)

Watson fought mostly welterweights and middleweights from 1915 to 1919. He served a sentence of 1-to-15 years for burglary at San Quentin State Prison in California, starting October 28, 1919, and was released on parole November 28, 1922.

According to the World War I Draft Registration database on Ancestry.com, one James Corbett Watson was born on December 8, 1894, in Pueblo, Colorado. He was working as an "athlete" and registered for the draft in Maricopa, California on June 5, 1917. His mother and sister were listed as being solely dependent on him.

According to a record in digital form in the California, Death Index, 1905-1939 database on Ancestry.com, one James Watson was born about 1896 and died on July 20, 1926 in San Diego County, California.
