Bout Summary

Roberto Duran, the former lightweight and welterweight champion, put himself into position for another title shot with a fourth-round knockout of Pipino Cuevas Saturday night in a scheduled 12-round elimination fight between former world champions.

Duran was in control all the way as he kept Cuevas off balance with stinging left jabs in the first two rounds and then began landing combinations and rights to the head of Cuevas.

Duran dropped Cuevas for the second time in the fourth round with a right-left-right combination. Cuevas struggled to his feet before his handlers stepped in to stop the fight.

The victory raised Duran's record to 75-4. The knockout was his 56th. He now is in line to face Davey Moore, the W.B.A. junior middleweight champion, who successfully defended his title Saturday with a fourth-round knockout of Gary Guiden.

Cuevas, who had not fought in more than a year since losing a 10-round decision to Roger Stafford, looked sluggish as his record fell to 29-8. Duran weighed 152 pounds and Cuevas 149.
