1968 Middle Atlantic Golden Gloves Champion

It was Dec 10, 1968 and Joe Frazier was fighting Oscar Bonavena in Philadelphia (Frazier won a 15-round decision) “I was then an amateur boxer fighting for Ralph Tribuani on his shows at Fournier Hall” recalled Ron Branch of New Castle, now a pro lightweight. “Ralph took me to Philly to see the Frazier fight and we sat at ringside with Rocky Marciano. Ralph introduced me to Rocky and explained I was a promising amateur fighter. Rocky shook my hand and said “You look more like an altar boy.”

Tribuani made Chris and Angelo Dundee aware of Branch before his passing. “I met Dundee in Miami Beach around 1969-1970, when I was still fighting as an amateur. I walked into the Fifth Street Gym in Miami and introduced myself to Dundee (Angelo).” Ron Branch 1993

Ronnie trained at the 5th Street Gym in Miami, with Muhammad Ali at Deer Lake and with Stanley Kitten Hayward.

Branch fought on Herman Taylor’s final card on August 15, 1975.

After the Sugar Hart fight in 1968 Branch’s record was reported as 21-2 by the Wilmington Evening Journal. His professional record has been reported as 14-6-4.
