- Fought the late former world champion Billy Costello in the Golden Gloves Semi-Final 135 Pound Open in 1976.
- Went to the 1976 Olympic trials and fought the late NABF Middleweight James Shuler at 132 pounds. Aaron Pryor was in the same group.
- Fought in the finals of the Spanish Golden gloves with future NABF Welterweight champion Pedro Vilella and got disqualified for low blows in the third round. A riot ensued.
