  • Martinez entered as the world middleweight champion according to The Ring Magazine. Cotto was ranked as the # 3 junior middleweight contender by the same publication. [2]

  • Cotto landed damaging power shots, forcing Martinez' hands up on the defensive all night, taking him out of his usual hands down style.
  • Cotto won every round except the third. In the ninth, Martinez' knee appeared to (but didn't) touch the canvas for a 10-8 Cotto round.
  • Cotto stated after the bout: "The most beautiful training camp in my career." Cotto also cut Martinez over the right eye.
  • Martinez said "I got hit. I was cold, and I never recovered from that. You gotta know when to win, and you gotta know when to lose."
  • Martinez trainer Pablo Sarmiento on stopping the bout: "For three, four rounds before, his (Martinez') knees were not responding."
