Fighters for other bouts failed or refused to appear, including Joe Dundee for a title bout with Ace Hudkins due to his manager's claim that they did not receive $60,000 promised them "unofficially" by promoter Dick Donald. The crowd of 17,000 disgruntled fans smashed ringside seats and were quelled only after a riot call brought additional police with their night sticks to the scene.
