According to the Sept. 27, 1924 SPOKANE SPOKESMAN-REVIEW, Kelly and his manager were in town, after having covered 27 states since February, taking on all comers. The paper reported that Kelly had 54 bouts, with 14 KOs, and had never been knocked out himself.
Kelley's real name was Sam Gaudes, and he was a member of the Milwaukee Gaudes boxing family, which included: Pete (who knocked him out twice in pro bouts), Frank, Johnny, and Tony Gaudes. He was born in Winnipeg, Canada, and moved to Milwaukee at the age of 13, living in Milwaukee's Third Ward. After retiring from the ring he worked as a house painter with Service Painting Corp and with Brant & Nielsen Painting Corp. He subsequently moved to California and worked at Pacific Aeromotive as a maintenance painter, prior to retiring in 1968. He died in 1971, aged 65, in North Hollywood of cancer.
