Maggard was convicted of threatening police officers and allowing gambling in his business establishment in 1949, allowing gambling again in 1950, and assault with intent to kill. Maggard reportedly also served time in prison in Florida. On August 1, 1960, Maggard shot and killed former boxer Gene Luker in an argument over an $80 debt that Luker contended Maggard owed him. A grand jury later determined that Maggard acted in self-defense after Luker had shot Maggard in the thigh.
