After his own boxing career ended, Spider Roach became a manager/trainer of other boxers. By August 1923, he was in the Seattle, Washington, area, where he trained World Champion Tod Morgan. He also handled Abie Israel (developing him as an amateur while in Seattle), Spug Myers, Travie Davis, and Vic Foley.

Roach was once rated as "the greatest gymnasium scrapper"/sparring partner of his day. For a while in 1918 he was Benny Leonard's chief sparring partner.
