Bout Summary
"Ellsworth (Spider) Webb of Chicago stopped Terry Downes, the British middleweight champion, after eight rounds of their bruising bout in Wembley Stadium Tuesday night. The 22 year old Briton spurted blood from cuts above both eyes after a torrid fight that had the crowd of 10,000 roaring throughout. Webb, the world's 3rd ranked contender for Ray Robinson's 160 lb. title, was slightly ahead on points when referee Eugene Henderson terminated the fight at the end of the 8th round. There was only one knockdown in the bloody battle. Webb pushed home a punishing short right to Downes' chin in the 1st round and the Briton sank to the canvas. Downes came back swinging with both fists but after the 5th round Downes was played out." - Associated Press.
