Bout Summary

Hearns came out pumping the jab, and a half minute into the round, landed a left hook that hurt Maynard and buckled his knees. Hearns followed up with a barrage of punches that sent Maynard stumbling backward. Maynard was able to clinch and keep from going down. Midway through the round, and still clearly hurt, Maynard threw a left hook that missed wildly, causing him to lose his balance and fall to the mat. The knockout occurred as Maynard came forward and threw a lunging left hook. Hearns stepped to the side and loaded up on a right hand that glanced off Maynard's shoulder and landed behind his left ear. Maynard stumbled across the ring and landed flat on his back. He made it to a seated position at the count of four and started to get to his feet at eight, but was unable to beat the referee's count.
