This bout was part of the inaugural card of the Legends of Boxing series, which was televised on pay-per-view.

In the main event, 49-year-old Larry Holmes stopped 46-year-old James (Bonecrusher) Smith in eight rounds. The two had first fought each other in 1984, with Holmes winning by a 12th-round TKO to successfully defend the IBF heavyweight title.

Page and Witherspoon also first fought each other in 1984, with Witherspoon winning by a 12-round majority decision to capture the vacant WBC heavyweight title.

On this night, the 40-year-old Page came out with a flurry and floored the 41-year-old Witherspoon in the first round. Witherspoon recovered but later tore a back muscle and didn't answer the bell for the eighth round.
