Tom Patrick was the elder brother of fellow boxer Bob Patrick. They were of Irish-American heritage, and from a family of 12 children. Their father died when Tom was 6, and he left home at age 11. Patrick became a bellhop, then a fly boy at the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper. He trained at a gym for four years before becoming a pro boxer at age 21. He reportedly had some 70 bouts in 11 years.
