Trevor Berbick 218 lbs beat Greg Page 222 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

From The Associated Press, June 12, 1982:

Canadian Trevor Berbick battered Greg Page with body blows and scored a unanimous 10-round decision over the previously undefeated heavyweight contender Friday night on the undercard of the Gerry Cooney-Larry Holmes World Boxing Council heavyweight championship match.

Berbick stalked Page throughout the fight, twice knocking out his opponent's mouthpiece after softening him up with lefts and rights to the midsection.

Berbick, who defeated Muhammad Ali in his last fight in December, stunned Page in the second round. He backed him into a corner and had him sagging on the ropes before Page escaped.

In the sixth round, a short right to the midsection in the opening seconds put Page on the ropes again and had him reeling.

In the 10th, Berbick, who weighed 218, knocked out Page's mouthpiece again.

Page, who weighed 221½, lost for the first time in 19 professional bouts. Berbick is 21-2-1.

Page is the United States Boxing Association champion, although his title was not on the line Friday, and was ranked No.3 by the WBC, one notch ahead of Berbick.

The Canadian had lost a bid for the WBC title when he was outpointed by Holmes April 11, 1981. That fight was the only one of Holmes' 11 title defenses to go the distance.

From The New York Times, June 13, 1982:

Greg Page broke his right thumb in the second round of his 10-round fight against Trevor Berbick Friday night on the Larry Holmes-Gerry Cooney undercard.

Berbick, in an upset, won by a unanimous decision.

Page, who had been undefeated and was the second-ranked heavyweight contender, said he knew he had broken the thumb as soon as he hit Berbick on the side of the head. "It really hurt," he said. "I couldn't do much after that."

Without his right hand, Page was clearly outpointed by the fifth-ranked Berbick. The thumb was in a splint today, and Page said the splint would have to remain for "six or seven weeks."
