"Victor Galindez defended his world light heavyweight title Tuesday by beating South African challenger Kosie Smith on points over 15 rounds at Johannesburg's Rand Stadium. Smith has one of the hardest punches in his weight division but tends to lose his head in the ring. Galindez outboxed Smith and only once, in the 4th round, did the challenger have the upper hand when he stormed into the champion, slamming telling blows at Galindez' face and body. But the Argentine recovered quickly and had Smith, in turn, backpedalling from a two-fisted attack. Smith gamely carried the fight to Galindez, who opened a cut below Smith's left eye and gave him a bloody nose. In the final five rounds, Galindez attacked almost at will, pounding left hooks into the challenger. Both Smith's eyes were swollen but he kept coming forward, taking more punishment. The decision was unanimous." -United Press International
- This bout had been postponed twice before. Originally set to take place on September 18, it was rescheduled for October 2nd due to Galindez coming down with the flu. The October 2nd date was then shifted to October 5th due to the heavy rains that soaked the open air Rand stadium.
