- Of the U.S.S. Idaho while an amateur, he won the heavyweight championship in the Pacific Northwest Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament in Seattle, Washington, December 16, 1935. He had scored two KOs, and won a third battle by a lopsided margin.
- He also was the United States Navy's Heavyweight Champion in 1936 and 1937.
- Some newspapers reported his boxing nickname as being "Battleship Bill Boyd."
- According to the August 11, 1937 edition of the Everett Daily Herald(Everett, WA, USA) newspaper, Boyd was from Birmingham, Alabama, USA. That article reported that he was the former Northwest Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion, as well as the former United States Navy titlest. He was twice the Navy Heavyweight Champion. Further, that article reported that Boyd's amateur record was 78 (69 KOs)-2 losses (on points only, no KO losses)-0.
