William Phelps ('Brighton Bill'), age 20, died March 12, 1838, of injuries sustained during a bout with Owen Swift at Royston, England. He had been knocked out in the 85th round. This was the third ring fatality in which Swift was involved. Phelps himself was involved in the ring-death of George Daniels.
