Bout Summary
- Good sportsmanship by both men, who touched gloves before each round and hugged after each.
- Wangek didn't appear to do anything deliberate, it was just a hard fought bout with many close rounds. Edge to Gonzalez in last two.
- Brutal war, with both men trading body and head power shots fighting in a telephone booth throughout.
- Hard hitting southpaw challenger Wangek decked Gonzalez, pound for pound the best fighter in the world, in the first round, a strong start.
- Referee Steve Willis declared accidental head butt by both combatants caused a cut to right eye of Gonzalez in round three. Bout continued.
- Fourth round completed, eliminating the possibility of a technical draw. Gonzalez complained of butting at the end of round four.
- Break in the action in round six due to another clash of heads causing an accidental head butt. Gonzalez claimed it was deliberate.
- Referee took a point away from Wangek with 18 seconds left in round six after a clash of heads opened a bad cut on the right eye of Gonzalez, ruled intentional by the ref, giving Gonzalez a 10-8 round in what appeared to be an even fight to that point.
- Both fighters were simultaneously warned for head butting by referee late in round seven.
