Tsuji died on March 24, 2009 from injuries sustained in this bout. Following the knockout loss, Tsuji was immediately rushed to the Jikei Medical University Hospital where he tragically passed away three days later from a brain haemorrhage. It was the first ring death to occur in a Japanese title bout. Of note, Kanemitsu was also hospitalised after the bout with a slight brain injury which led to the Japan Boxing Commission to force him to hang up the gloves for good.
