  • Allakhverdiev entered as the #7 junior welterweight contender in the world according to The Ring Magazine. Vargas, who was fighting as a junior welterweight for the first time in over three years, was unranked by the same publication. [1]
  • An accidental clash of heads in the eighth round opened a gash on the left eyebrow of Allakhverdiev. Action was paused in both the eighth and ninth rounds to allow the ringside physician to view the cut. Allakhverdiev indicated that he could see and action continued. By the eleventh round, swelling had also developed to his right eye.
  • ESPN's Dan Rafael and HBO's Harold Lederman both scored the fight 115-113 in favor of Allakhverdiev.
