Gene Kelly (left)

Gene Kelly was the amateur boxing coach for the Chicago Park District on Chicago's south side. Gene coincidentally worked for someone with the same last name, Edmund L. Kelly the General Superintendent for the Chicago Park District. Gene Kelly coached several Golden Glove Champions and boxers who became successful professionals, as boxers and trainers, such as world cruiserweight champion Lee Roy Murphy and amateur standout Frankie Smith, just to name a few. Pictured with Gene is former World middleweight Champion Tony Zale, amateur boxer Stan Podgorski and Chicago IL Mayor Richard J. Daley.
