yep, yep & yep.
I know he's not popular, but I stand by my claim that he brings more than just a weight advantage into the ring. If he was
that terrible a boxer, he'd have been stopped plenty of times by now, regardless of weight advantage. A decent pro middleweight will beat the crap out of a guy who can't box, even if he weighs 200lbs.
One thing's fairly certain though, if Martinez lets it get to the cards it's game over. No way Don Jose lets his godson lose this one on points!
As I said, I don't think he's
terrible. He's a big strong unit with heavy hands, who has his father's chin--which let's face it is probably enough to legitimately get you a "world" title these days. He can box, obviously, or at least fight well enough to overcome his technical deficiencies. Remorselessly coming after you like the Terminator (particularly when you are bigger & stronger than anyone else you fight) is easily enough to dispose of a lot of fighters.
But watch the Rubio fight, the Zbik fight, & yes, the Lee fight (a man who let's not forget once ran out of gas & got smashed up by the mighty Brian Vera), & it's obvious his only chance is SGM getting old overnight, or Martinez fighting stupid by standing toe-to-toe with him. He gets annoyed when you miss him. He moves in straight lines. He punches wi-i-i-ide. He has slow feet.
That's why victory for Chavez would be tantamount to a victory for the forces of darkness. It says you can cheat, buy, cherry-pick & finagle your way to the top, & then get a paper victory over those who haven't had the same advantages, & you can stand there & legitimately call yourself the best in the world.
Boxing is an emotive, romantic sport. It is driven by the heart, not the head. This is becoming symbolic for a lot of people, because boxing fans aren't cold & logical, we're volatile & emotional. Victory for Chavez would mean a sour, ugly taste lingers in the mouth (even though anyone with half an ounce of sense could see that the entire point of boxing, forever & ever hasn't been what we think it should be).
Martinez should box his fvcking head off. Should. But when you add in the age, the drugs (I'm sorry to keep harping on this but when your major advantage is that you're bigger & stronger than everyone else
& you're a drug cheat, it bears repeating in case we lose sight of the essential issue), the nepotism, it's all so damnably intriguing. So intriguing I haven't even made a man-love thread about Jhonny Gonzalez, who I love sincere & true, & is in a proper fight the same night...
Oh, hang on...
