Christ almighty. I certainly don't wish the lad lasting harm, but fornicate me he does a really good job of coming across as a complete & utter fuckwit, does he not?

Surely someone worth that much must have a PR man/fluffer who can get in-between the microphone & Chavez XXL's enormous trap before he inserts his foot in it?

I used to have a lot of sympathy for Chavez when he first started out. The pressure on this kid with little amateur experience to be as good as his dad was huge. He was never going to be his dad, never going to be as exciting to watch or as popular thus in many ways, always going to be a failure.

Then came a couple of dodgy looking decisions, then came the assisted weight gain, now here comes the crap coming out of his mouth.

I worry about this fight, but that is only because I really, really want Martinez to win

I have to say, Chavez Jr is going to win on points. If Barker and Macklin can mix it with Martinez, Chavez Jr certainly can.

Anybody have a link to watch it in the UK? HBO have one of those fornicating infuriating blocks to stop people outside the US watching.

Chavez XXL's strength & size advantages will be massive. On the other hand, no-one has ever missed a punch on Chavez XXL's massive head.

Barker & Macklin were able to mix it with Martinez, but I'd lay odds to evens that a man who struggled with Sebastian Zbik shouldn't be anointed quite so quickly...

Having watched that second episode, no creative editing could ever disguise the fact Chavez is an indifferent, lazy rich kid whilst Martinez is a hungry dangerous animal. I cannot see any other outcome than Chavez getting brutally KOd.

Talent, technique, desire, dedication, all soo much more important than a weight advantage, and those first four qualities Martinez has in abundance. He will vaporise this spaced out fat boy.

All qualities JCC Jr has too, to be fair. If he was just a rich kid pretending to box, he'd have been found out as a novice and would never have made it this far.

I think it'll be a good fight anyway, apparently its on primetime ppv?

I think the "rich kid pretending to box" stuff has been pushed too far & really isn't the issue.

The issue is that he's a confirmed drug-cheat who mysteriously gains 50% of his bodyweight so gets in the ring the same size as Rocky Marciano, who was gifted a title from his godfather & fought a bunch of stiffs & no-marks whilst having commissions "forget" to drug test him & also somehow when he was drug-tested "lose" the results.

& if that little lot isn't enough for you to maybe see why people root against him versus the humble, rightful, dragged-himself-up from poverty should-be actual genuine middleweight champion of the world whose title he has usurped, he also eats babies, causes cancer & is believed to stomp Tokyo whilst wearing a rubber monster suit.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot, Chavez XXL's godfather (or should that be Godfather) has bet on him for this fight, big-style. & also, Sulaiman is whining that the Nevada commission went with their selection of a judge (Stanley Christodolou, who's been judging fights since Alexis Arguello was fighting) rather than the WBC's hand-picked stooge. I mean, FFS.

Absolutely astonishing. How has Suilaman never fallen foul of huge lawsuits? This is open corruption. Martinez better be ready to take this out of the judges hands.

The Chavez/Suilaman relationship really is scary, and it goes back over 20 years. If I can be bothered, I might go through my old BIs and get the full story for the forum - they used to constantly expose Jose, it was hilarious.

yep, yep & yep.

I know he's not popular, but I stand by my claim that he brings more than just a weight advantage into the ring. If he was that terrible a boxer, he'd have been stopped plenty of times by now, regardless of weight advantage. A decent pro middleweight will beat the crap out of a guy who can't box, even if he weighs 200lbs.

One thing's fairly certain though, if Martinez lets it get to the cards it's game over. No way Don Jose lets his godson lose this one on points!

Hadn't heard any of the drug testing issues before, as not followed the Chavez career at all, apart from recently when I saw him bulldoze Andy Lee - and watching that, the first thing I thought was he looked suspiciously "improved"

And for that reason, I reckon he might get a points win here...though I'd love to see Sergio hammer him

Does Chavez's drug fails put a question mark over Freddie Roach and his other fighters?

I get the feeling Roach isn't quite as influential in Chavez's camp as he is his other fighters.

Although I've always considered a slight question mark over Roach. Larry did go over to train with him a bit (2 + 2 = ???)....

As I said, I don't think he's terrible. He's a big strong unit with heavy hands, who has his father's chin--which let's face it is probably enough to legitimately get you a "world" title these days. He can box, obviously, or at least fight well enough to overcome his technical deficiencies. Remorselessly coming after you like the Terminator (particularly when you are bigger & stronger than anyone else you fight) is easily enough to dispose of a lot of fighters.

But watch the Rubio fight, the Zbik fight, & yes, the Lee fight (a man who let's not forget once ran out of gas & got smashed up by the mighty Brian Vera), & it's obvious his only chance is SGM getting old overnight, or Martinez fighting stupid by standing toe-to-toe with him. He gets annoyed when you miss him. He moves in straight lines. He punches wi-i-i-ide. He has slow feet.

That's why victory for Chavez would be tantamount to a victory for the forces of darkness. It says you can cheat, buy, cherry-pick & finagle your way to the top, & then get a paper victory over those who haven't had the same advantages, & you can stand there & legitimately call yourself the best in the world.

Boxing is an emotive, romantic sport. It is driven by the heart, not the head. This is becoming symbolic for a lot of people, because boxing fans aren't cold & logical, we're volatile & emotional. Victory for Chavez would mean a sour, ugly taste lingers in the mouth (even though anyone with half an ounce of sense could see that the entire point of boxing, forever & ever hasn't been what we think it should be).

Martinez should box his fvcking head off. Should. But when you add in the age, the drugs (I'm sorry to keep harping on this but when your major advantage is that you're bigger & stronger than everyone else & you're a drug cheat, it bears repeating in case we lose sight of the essential issue), the nepotism, it's all so damnably intriguing. So intriguing I haven't even made a man-love thread about Jhonny Gonzalez, who I love sincere & true, & is in a proper fight the same night...

Oh, hang on...

I've now watched Gonazles vs Vasquez, Hasegawa and Nishioka. Excellent boxer/puncher but not exactly iron jawed him vs Ponce is going to be a bang up

agree almost completely with datsue. it would be a bad thing if chavez was somehow able to win this. i cant believe so many are tipping chavez to win . martinez is miles ahead in almost every dept other than size and youth.he should be able to land on chavez at will and hes a vicious puncher. i think that once he finds his range he will ko chavez in brutal style, something like ray mercer did to tommy morrison.

Can't stand Chavez Jr and it amazes me that people see this as a close fight. I expect and hope to see a lesson being dished out tonight.

And, it needs to be said, Chavez has terrible, terrible hair :shame:

Too true, too true. I should've added that to me list, really...

Everyone seen the weigh-in footage? Chavez looks like he should be on a drip. Funnily enough, that's probably what he's on as we speak...
