Cheers .
In all fairness mate....I noticed this thread when you posted it a couple weeks back, but Garey is a mate of mine, we've trained together in the past and used to work together, so naturally enough I went and told him the few interesting snippets on the thread. Though you were fed quite a bit of duff in all honesty. Some of the disrespect shown by some on the thread was out of order. Garey has been out of action for a few years now, but he's one of those types who genuinely does always stay in decent condition. Certainly I knew he has more left to offer than many here seemed to think.
A quick look at your lads record showed he could bang a bit, but obviously the quality of opposition on the white collar circuit is questionable. But the performances against the couple pro's were a bit noteworthy. Thorpe not so much because he can't punch, but to run Conception close was interesting.
Regarding the fight on Friday, I thought your lad showed in defeat he's definitely useful. He had a bit of size advantage over Garey, but even so he was more than holding his own for 2 and a half rounds. He's obviously still raw but showed strength and genuine power. As Garey's mate I was worried and thought your man had edged the first couple. And he was having a solid 3rd round too until getting dropped. The last thing a fighter loses is his power and Garey could always punch. And he was then able to finish things off in the 4th. On paper a 4th round stoppage appears routine, but speaking honestly I felt relieved when it was over.
As a friend of Garey's I think I'd like to see him call it a day now. Imo he's got more to lose than gain by carrying on because as a former commonwealth title challenger he'd be a good scalp for an up and comer to have on their slate, while he's only really fighting for fun now. But it definitely looks like he wants to carry on and have a few more.
Just out of interest what was your take on the fight and would your lad be interested in a rematch?
If im perfectly honest , i thought he would be past it and that it would be a name on my lads record which ive since told gary , of course gary showed he is still very fit and strong , my lad was winning the fight according to the judges ,personally im not sure , he definately won rd 2 and was ahead in rd 3 , but in the corner i thought gary won the 1st rd although everyone we spoke to after disagreed with me on that and admittedly its not easy to score a fight in the corner as emotions are high etc , but i just thought it was a close round and being the away fighter assumed it would have gone to gary , but he got caught eventually and having never been down before he didnt know what to do to alter things , and to be perfectly honest neither did i in his corner as im not usually in peoples corners i just ended up having to on the day and when i have been in corners lately its not usually when competing with guys of garys level .
Im happy with the fight to a certain extent , as Brendan showed he could hang in that company , and despite the loss received a lot of praise , He can learn from that fight , at this point in time a loss doesnt matter , its nothing official , He has said he wants to rematch Gary again before he turns pro , its kind of given him a renewed drive as he was desperately dissapointed to have lost , he didnt think it should have been stopped , although i disagree , i think the stoppage was right .
As far as my lad being bigger , thats not true , Gary weighed in at 11 stone , Brendan was 10 stone 9 .
Yes theres things to work on , but after 20 months of boxing i should think its obvious he isnt the finished article , but at 23 he hasnt got a vast amount of time on his side , i doubt theres many guys who have been boxing for as short a time as he has that could handle being the company he has in his fights .
Hes out again in Leeds in a few weeks , Hes then on my home show in July before competing back in stoke in the cash fighter , whom im led to believe Russo is his main competition in that , i didnt see much of his fight at the end so ive no idea what Russo is capable of yet .
Gary was very respectful afterwards and seems a top bloke , and the organiser Stef also seemed a nice guy .
