Does anyone know the origin of this practice of naming?
Especially interested in the "Kid" + Place Name formula.
Names I have so far:
Kid Chocolate
Kid Gavilan
Kid Galahad
The Alabama Kid
Kid Norfolk
Cocoa Kid
Ted "Kid" Lewis
Benny "Kid" Paret
Please add to the list!
Even better if you know the stories behind the names.
Indeed. Do you have any theories?

Re: "Kid" X
Huge prizes now on offer to anyone who can tell us why boxers began adopting the Kid name.
As I've said, I have no idea. But forced to guess, perhaps the son of a fighter pulled the gloves on years ago and the promoter thought it was a good idea?
Maybe a scenario existed where the fighting son had the same Christian name as his father and it was the easiest way to differentiate between the two?
Can anyone offer anything better?

When someone say's "He is The Kid!" meaning very good at something they do, therefore receiving the nickname "The Kid?"

Nice one. Was it because of his black hair, or because he gave people black eyes?

Re: "Kid" X
There was an angry little welterweight called Andrew 'Kid Thunder' Hartley who occasionally posted on another forum about 8 years ago.
"Kid Thunder's'' pro record reads a rather modest 2 wins from 25 fights. Of his 23 losses 22 were via stoppage, and he was only a 4 round fighter.

Not sure how he acquired the belt with his pro record? Perhaps he was an outstanding amateur

With regards to the origin - I think Kid McCoy was the first "Kid" in boxing and I understand the nickname was used because he looked young/sleight, even when an adult.
WRT Cervantes, his uncle gave him the nickname which was borrowed from a fighter from Nicaragua (I assume Miguel Angel Rivas). The name is supposedly taken from the name of a tree that grows locally, much like an oak. If you do a Google translate of the word it comes up as "defender". Both would make sense.

He was also known as "The Real Mcoy" a great way to be remembered and what a legacy to leave. ![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

Didn't even think to look for him in this forum. Remembered his posts from years ago elsewhere.

Even though Andrew "Kid Thunder" Hartley only has 2 wins, one of those he has in common with

I think you may be right about McCoy but i think Lavigne may pre date him... i may be wrong but i seem to remember reading he had a decent career as a prize fighter before converting to the Queensbury rules. Certainly an interesting subject, and makes you wonder just how far back some more common ring names can be found.

That was an act of opportunism on the part of Hartley targeting Zelenoff before he'd had even a pro fight of experience to fall back on. It was Hartley's 15th fight for god's sake!Cutman Scabbers wrote:Redback Rasta wrote:Just went and had a look and so he ispalooka wrote:

At least Wilder had the class to wait until Zelenoff was prime before tackling him.
